Get Your Bike and Kit Right from the Start.
Riding from London to Paris.
500km over three days is an incredible, rewarding challenge. It’s physically taxing, mentally demanding, and at times uncomfortable.
You most certainly want to do this with the right ‘tools’ to make the job easier. I’ve put together a few tips and considerations so that when you invest your well-earned money, you do it with knowledge and right the first time.
The Right Bike Is Non-Negotiable.
For this event, using a road bike is super important. This isn’t a casual spin or an off-road adventure; it's long hours on tarmac, covering a serious distance day after day. A proper road bike is designed for efficiency, speed, and endurance on paved surfaces. The geometry, gearing, weight, and rolling resistance all make a significant difference over 500km.
Turning up on a mountain bike or hybrid will make the ride unnecessarily hard. Heavier frames, wider tyres, and upright positioning increase fatigue and reduce efficiency and over three days, that energy loss adds up quickly.
Ideally, you want:
A well-fitted road bike (comfort is key).
Smooth, road-specific tyres in good condition.
Appropriate gearing for steady climbing.
A recently serviced drivetrain and brakes.
This ride rewards efficiency. The right bike will conserve energy, protect your body, and make the overall experience far more enjoyable.
Prepare for Four Seasons in One Ride.
Over 500km, expect changing conditions: cold early starts, warm afternoons, possible wind, and likely rain at some point. Layering is essential.
Base Layer
Moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating.
Cycling Jersey
Breathable with practical storage.
Arm & Leg Warmers
Adaptable for shifting temperatures.
Waterproof Jacket or Gilet
Lightweight, packable, and genuinely waterproof.
Being able to adjust your kit quickly keeps your body working efficiently and prevents unnecessary energy drain.
Invest in Quality Bib Shorts.
Saddle comfort becomes critical on multi-day endurance rides. A quality pair of bib shorts with a proven chamois is a must. Over 500km, small discomforts can turn into major issues. Don’t compromise here and use chamois cream to reduce friction and soreness.
Don’t Overlook the Basics
Proper cycling socks for moisture control.
Gloves suited for both cool mornings and warmer conditions.
Clear and tinted lenses for changing light.
A small repair kit: tubes, pump or CO2, multi-tool.
Preparation is what turns a tough ride into a manageable and enjoyable one.
